Creating a College-Going Culture in Alaska

Educators are instrumental in creating a positive outlook on life-long learning. You can inspire your students to dream big and develop goals at a young age, and help create a college-going culture in Alaska.

Start Early

  • Talk about higher education and its value frequently. If children hear early that college is in their future, they are more likely to believe that it is possible. When families set this goal early, they have more time to prepare.
  • Help students establish age-appropriate goals.

Involve Parents

  • Encourage parents to help reinforce the message that college is possible.
  • Refer parents to programs and resources that can support their child academically, financially, and socially.
  • Provide information to parents about college, saving for college, and financial aid. Direct them to other resources, such as those provided by the federal government or the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education.

Establish Relationships with Colleges

  • Invite representatives from colleges or vocational training programs to speak to your class about their dreams for the future. Develop relationships with institutions that best fit the needs of your students.
  • Contact your local college campus to arrange a tour for your students. Colleges often welcome students, teachers, and parents! If you don’t have a campus in your community, consider setting up a videoconference activity with a university professor, or setting aside a class period to explore campus life online.

Provide Role Models

  • Make a point to share with your students about the successes of your former students, especially those that attended the school or district in which you are teaching.
  • Invite former students to volunteer, take part in school activities or speak to your class.
  • Invite professionals or successful entrepreneurs in your community to share their career paths and talk to your students about their dreams for the future.

 Our Programs

I'm Going to CollegeSM
Hundreds of 5th- and 6th- graders across Alaska get a chance to be a college student for a day through the I’m Going to CollegeSM program. You can encourage the same goal in your students by incorporating age-appropriate lessons on college and career planning into your curriculum, and scheduling a visit to a local college campus. I Know I Can
The I Know I Can program brings professional college graduates into 2nd-grade classrooms across Alaska to read a story about young animal characters dreams of who they want to be when they grow up. The children then draw a picture of their own career aspirations and can discuss them with the volunteers. Invite members of your community to the classroom to inspire your students with their stories! Read more about I Know I Can.
