As a teacher, counselor, career resource guide, or other involved educator, there are many things you can do to help your students manage the transition from high school to college:
September - December
- Encourage students to create a portfolio in the Alaska Career Information System (AKCIS), if they don't already have one.
- Schedule a financial aid night. Call ACPE Outreach staff to request a free financial aid presentation.
- Plan a career day. Invite community members to talk about careers available in your community, and representatives from other organizations in the state that offer career opportunities.
- Organize a trip to your nearest college fair, or a college fair for your school.
- Organize a field trip to local campuses, or invite admissions representatives from schools to come speak at your school.
January - May
- Encourage seniors to submit their FAFSA before February 15. Visit www.fsa4counselors.ed.gov for more information on federal student aid programs.
- Attend College Goal Sunday in January or February for free help filling out FAFSA. If College Goal Sunday is not available in your community, schedule your own FAFSA Workshop by calling ACPE Outreach staff.
- Check in with seniors on their college application process. Have they applied for admission and taken necessary tests?
